Historically speaking, precious gemstones were either Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphies or Emeralds. The value of each of these stones is determine by the gem's rarity, size and clarity. At times different cultures have also considered opals, amethyst, aquamarine, peridot and cat's eye as precious gemstones.
